Fishing the Laguna Madre: A Beginner's Guide

The Laguna Madre — the hypersaline lagoon between the mainland and the barrier islands — is a legendary flats fishery. It's shallow, clear, and stuffed with redfish and speckled trout. Best of all, you don't need a boat to get started.

Know your two main targets

• Redfish (red drum): copper-colored, hard-fighting, famous for the spot near the tail. The signature catch.
• Speckled trout (spotted seatrout): abundant, delicious, and a great confidence-builder for beginners.
• Flounder, black drum, and sheepshead round out a typical day.

Wading is the great equalizer

You can fish the flats on foot. Find accessible shoreline along the Laguna, wade out slowly into waist-deep water, and cast toward grass beds and sandy potholes. No expensive boat required — just a license, a rod, and patience.

When to go

Fall and spring are prime, with cooler water and active fish. Early morning and the hours around moving tides are your best windows. Summer fishing is excellent too — just go early to beat the heat.
